Dads & Daughters Camping Group
COYOTE CLUB • SAN DIEGO YMCA ADVENTURE GUIDES
Chameleon Pack
We’re a group of dads and daughters (5-11) that go camping in San Diego County and surrounding regions between September-June each year. We stand out with our rainbow tie-dyed shirts at campouts, and are well known amongst other Adventure Guides as the easy going group. Our club takes pride in making sure everyone feels welcome and putting the girls first. It’s a great culture, and the daughters step up to make sure new girls are included without having to be told to. It’s also great for us dads to make friends and unwind around the fire after bedtime.
There’s comfort in numbers
We have a trailer packed with all the shared camping basics. A full kitchen with a big three burner stove/griddle, propane tanks, marshmallow sticks, a coffee maker, toaster oven, pots, pans, cooking tools, generator, lights, pop up canopy, tables and trash cans. 🌱 This past season we made an effort to reduce camping waste by moving away from single use plates and utensils. We now have 36 plates, 48 metal forks and spoons, along with 24 butter knives in the trailer.
Meals
About two weeks before each campout, the Chameleon Chiefs will send out a link to an online signup for cooking and cleanup volunteers. Some dads like to cook, others prefer cleanup - don't worry, if you're not a chef. We generally charge $50 per family going for shared meals, and whatever you spend on food and supplies for Chameleon to make a shared meal is deducted from that. We usually keep it pretty universal on meals with the girls so we don’t get outside their comfort range. If your daughter isn’t into the meal, we always have spaghetti and red sauce or mac ‘n cheese on hand to make. For Mid-Rats, anything goes – and some dads really like to show off. As stated above, we have our trailer with a full kitchen at the ready. If you or your daughter have any dietary restrictions, reach out ahead and we’ll make sure the cooks are aware. Don’t be timid, we take pride in accommodating everyone.
We're made up of nine different groups
The YMCA has several Adventure Guide clubs, and ours is called Coyote. We're made up of nine groups: Bear, Bobcat, Chameleon, Sasquatch, Wallaby and Yosemite. These same groups come to every Coyote campout. If your daughter makes friends from another group, they’ll see them at the next campout. Check them out here.
